IMHO all they needed to do was update the style of the old site template, keeping the entire layout and navigation of the site, just make it look modern and work in all browsers and devices, not change it.

Classic is easier to navigate, probably because I am familiar with it.

I somewhat agree with you @AWPunter that they should have retained the same page layout and structure.

Beta is just that, it'll likely be improved somewhat until it adopted by most uses, then likely supersede the classic site as the main.
